kibbutz lotan

Lotan was one of the best experiences of my life; the families and people that live there were so accepting of me and my friend who went to volunteer for the summer; the atmosphere was relaxed but ethically rigorous, the work therapeutic and fun but challenging. It felt great to be so close to the earth; Lotan gives you the sense that humans can be part of nature without being destructive. By the time dinner rolled around, everyone having been worked out by the desert heat, we would feast and chat and cool off, and just enjoy each others company. And of course, each week we would have Saturdays to relax by the pool.

My friend and I were assigned to tidy up the guest rooms where people stayed when they came to watch the birds migrate. Other volunteers worked at the dairy or in the kitchen. There is also a date farm which was generally run my Lotan members. There was a handful of families living there permanently, and thus several children and dogs to play with, which was always a delight.

The other volunteers and shinshinim were so great, the whole experience really left me wishing I could stay forever! And the food was pretty good, too.
